A look at the bond between an illegal immigrant and a blue collar Italian-American from Queens. Bruno, a lazy, unemployed Italian American, is offered a job doing repairs for his landlord, who also suggests that he hire a Hispanic day laborer—what Bruno would call a “fence jumper”. He takes a chance on Ignacio, an eager young Mexican who speaks practically no English but works hard. Surprisingly, the two develop a rapport, and Bruno comes to love and admire both Ignacio and his wife, Gabriela. But the specter of deportation continues to loom large, especially when Ignacio has to be hospitalized. This story of an unlikely friendship casts a new light on a complex, often divisive issue.
