  • Moctesuma Esparza

    Chairman & Chief Executive Officer

    An award-winning producer, entertainment executive, entrepreneur and community activist, Moctesuma Esparza is well known for his contributions to the movie industry and commitment to creating opportunities for Latinos everywhere.  A partner in the highly successful Esparza-Katz Productions with Robert Katz, he worked with stars such as Robert Redford, Jennifer Lopez, Andy Garcia, Jimmy Smits, Martin Sheen, Robert Duvall and Halle Berry. Moctesuma founded Maya Entertainment, a vertically integrated media content company providing full service motion picture distribution and production. Maya acquires, produces and distributes multicultural and Latino themed product for all distribution platforms throughout the world and is dedicated to the growing U.S. Latino market. 

    Esparza’s latest film “Walkout” for HBO, tells the true story of the Chicano student uprising in East Los Angeles in 1968, where dramatic walkouts were staged at high schools to protest academic prejudice and dire school conditions. Other films produced by Esparza include: “Price of Glory” (2000), “Introducing Dorothy Dandridge”(1999), “Selma, Lord, Selma” (1998), “Selena” (1997),  “The Disappearance of Garcia Lorca” (1997),“The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez” (1994) and "The Milagro Beanfield War" (1988) among others.  

    In addition to his productions, Moctesuma established Maya Cinemas, a growing chain of modern movie theatre mega-plexes committed to providing the highest quality movie-going experience in new and redeveloping market areas with a strong Latino presence.  

    Born and raised in Los Angeles, Esparza received a B.A. and MFA in Theatre Arts, Motion Pictures and Television, from UCLA and from the onset of his career dedicated himself to empowering and transforming the images of Latinos in Hollywood.  

    Moctesuma has received numerous awards and honors including an Academy Award nomination, a Golden Globe nomination, an Emmy award, a Clio award, an Alma award, a Cine Golden Eagle award and was named one of the 50 “Most Powerful and Influential Latinos” of 2008 by The Imagen Foundation.   

  • Jeff Valdez

    Co-Chairman

    One of the first to recognize the power of Latinos on television, Jeff made history when he launched SiTV in 2003; America’s first English Language Latino themed cable network. SiTV is currently in over 20 million households and boasts a lineup of award winning original programming, much of it created and developed by Jeff himself. To date, sixty-five major advertisers from Fortune 500 companies are among SiTV’s top level client list. Jeff oversaw all operations in the critical first two years of the network and continues to serve on the board of SiTV.

    In 2007 Jeff was named as Co-Chairman of Maya Entertainment, along with industry veteran Moctesuma Esparza. Maya Entertainment is a Latino media content company providing full service motion picture distribution and production. Also in 2007, he joined forces with legendary filmmaker David Zucker of Zucker Brothers and founded Sandbox Entertainment. Sandbox is producing a series of G and PG Latino themed family movies. He was recently named Chairman of Quepasa Corp./Quepasa.com (NASDAQ-QPSA) a bi-lingual social network aimed at US and Latin American markets.

    Destined for a career in Entertainment, Jeff is 100% self taught, a true product of the school of life and has been featured in several books and articles about successful entrepreneurs whose success follows a similar story. His experience with the Latino market has brought him several notable speaking engagements for a variety of conferences, organizations and Fortune 500 companies.

    Jeff has received a number of accolades from the industry and was named on of CNN’s “Top 50 People Who Matter.” He has also received “The Racial Harmony Award” from the Center for Ethnic Understanding, and was included in the “Top 50 Minorities in Cable” by Multichannel News and the “Top 10 Players in the U.S. Hispanic Media Market” by Ad Age.

    Additionally, the NAMIC awarded him the “Quasar Award” for his groundbreaking success with SiTV and was also named one of the “Top 50 Marketers in America” by Advertising Age.

  • Jose Martinez, Jr.

    General Counsel

    A versatile addition to the Maya team, Jose is a seasoned entertainment, real estate, and corporate attorney with his base in New York and Los Angeles.

    In corporate matters, Martinez advises on formation, financing, intellectual property, acquisitions, sales, real estate and acts as trial counsel. In entertainment related matters, he has represented writers, directors, producers and distributors in all facets of production, finance, acquisition and distribution of media products.

    Jose is also co-founder and general manager of Arthouse Films, a joint venture with Chris Blackwell’s Palm Pictures. Under the Arthouse umbrella, he released 8-12 films theatrically and on DVD thereafter via Universal. Arthouse Films’ first theatrical release was Matthew Barney’s Cremaster Cycle in February 2003.
    Jose co-founded the Santa Fe Film Festival in Santa Fe, New Mexico is a partner in the UK music label HUB RECORDS. He serves on the board of directors of Operation Y.E.S., a not for profit company helping at-risk youth in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles as well as the National Association of Latino Producers.

    Martinez was born and raised in Los Angeles. He received a B.A. in political theory from UCLA and a J.D. from Hastings College of Law in San Francisco, CA.

  • Jeff Gonzalez

    Chief Financial Officer

    With nearly two decades of experience in corporate finance and accounting, Jeff has an impressive track record for successfully building, strengthening and leading both privately and publicly traded entertainment corporations.

    A seasoned entertainment executive with a career spanning over 18 years, he has lead the financial operation of four publicly traded entertainment companies, including Trimark Holdings, Inc., National Lampoon, Inc. and Interplay Entertainment, and was also an officer at Morgan Creek Productions. Jeff was instrumental in the sale of Trimark to Lionsgate in 2000. Additionally, Jeff has established or facilitated various debt and equity structures for both corporate and film financing.

    Jeff began his career at Price Waterhouse in their entertainment special practice unit as a Certified Public Accountant. He holds a B.A. in Economics, from the University of California, Los Angeles.

  • Tonantzin Esparza

    Vice President, Acquisitions

    In this role, Tonantzin leads a team providing all aspects of film acquisition including tracking, negotiation, and final selection. A big believer in the power of Latinos on stage and on the big screen, Tonantzin has and continues to support the many voices of Latinos in the Arts today.

    Tonantzin is a versatile entertainment executive well beyond her years and has been with Maya since its beginnings. One of the original members of its team, Tonantzin got her start in development and production with the company and was an associate producer in HBO’S Walkout. In acquisitions, Tonantzin has contributed much to the rapid success of the company, snatching up some of its most noteworthy releases such as Sleepdealer, Bajo la Sal, The Ministers and The Line.

    Tonantzin is also an accomplished actress and nailed a leading role in the HBO feature film “Walkout” for which she received the ALMA award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She made her professional stage debut in the Latino Theater Company’s award winning play Dementia directed by Jose Luis Valenzuela, which won the GLADD Award and was nominated for an Ovation Award for Best Cast Ensemble. Her performance in Dementia caught the attention of producer and comic George Lopez who wrote her a recurring guest starring role as Marisol the “I know, huh!” girl on his hit ABC TV sitcom The George Lopez Show.

    Tonantzin is also a co-founding member of The Latino Theater Company’s Laboratory at the Los Angeles Theater Center. The Lab wrote an original play entitled Melancholia and later toured the piece at the Edinburgh International Theater Festival in Scotland, where they were nominated for an Amnesty International Award.

    Additionally, Tonantzin sits on the Board of the Los Angeles Academy for Arts & Enterprise, an arts charter school in downtown founded by her father Moctesuma Esparza.

    Tonantzin was born and raised in Los Angeles. She earned her B.A Summa Cum Laude in Theater at the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television with a double major in Chicana/o Studies.

  • Sergio Aguero

    Production

    Sergio Agüero segued to film and television production from a successful career packaging, financing and distributing motion pictures. He has produced “Quarantine” at Sony Screen Gems (2008) and “No Reservations” at Warner Brothers (2007).

    At Maya Entertainment, under a producer housekeeping deal to generate movies and television with a Latino protagonist and/or theme geared to mainstream audiences, Sergio has most recently executive produced “The Dry Land” starring America Ferrera, Melissa Leo and Wilmer Valderrama. He is currently developing and co-financing a slate of genre movies (action, horror, musically driven) that speak to a 12-34 year old multi cultural demo.

    He is also in development on “Operation Checkmate” and the sequel to “Quarantine” at Sony, “Diego Ascending” at Big Beach Films. He also developed the series pilot “Red Ball,” at 20Th Century Television and adapted the international bestseller “The Queen of the South” at Warner Independent.

    Agüero was an executive producer on 2005 multiple Goya Awards winner in Spain “Princesas,” and Alfonso Cuaron’s “Y Tu Mama Tambien,” a 2003 Academy Award nominee for Best Original Screenplay.

    Previously, at Endeavor Agency, Agüero established their independent financing and international efforts, representing talent, financing companies and completed films. Among the titles he worked on were Joe Carnahan’s “Narc,” “Phillip Noyce’s “Follow the Rabbit Proof Fence” and Paul Schrader’s “Autofocus.” He also sold distribution rights to a number of films, including the box-office hit “The Blair Witch Project.”

    As Executive Vice President of Trimark Pictures, and one of three key executives managing the company, he built and ran international film and television sales. He was instrumentally involved in specialized production and acquisition efforts for such films as Kasi Lemmon’s “Eve’s Bayou,” Mira Nair’s “Kamasutra” and Marc Levin’s Sundance Audience Award winner “Slam.”

    Agüero also served as Vice President of International Sales at Vision International and, prior to that, at Epic Pictures. He began his entertainment career in acquisitions at Bjorck Film, as the Los Angeles representation for, among others, powerhouses Shochiku in Japan and Village Roadshow in Australia.

    Agüero earned his B.A. in economics and political science from Yale and became a financial analyst at Salomon Brothers in New York, participating in valuation analyses of takeover targets as well as fixed income and equity financings. He worked and traveled throughout Asia before relocating to Los Angeles and entering the entertainment industry.

  • David Rand

    Executive Vice President, Home Entertainment Division

    David Rand most recently was senior vice president of sales of Image Entertainment (based in Chatsworth), where was responsible for overseeing all customer and distributor relationships. He previously was the national sales director for Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. (Santa Monica) before becoming vice president and general manager of THINKFilm (Los Angeles), a privately held production and distribution company. Before that, he launched a home video company for legendary filmmaker Roger Corman’s company, New Concorde (Los Angeles), and prior to that he was the southeast regional sales director for Baker & Taylor, a Charlotte, N.C.-based division of W.R. Grace.

  • Elias Axume

    President, International Distribution

    Elias Axume is an accomplished and experienced international distribution executive. As Executive Vice President of Myriad Pictures he oversaw worldwide sales, distribution and acquisitions on a diverse slate of titles including Death Defying Acts with Catherine Zeta Jones, Factory Girl with Sienna Miller, and Copying Beethoven with Ed Harris to most recent titles such as Everyday with Helen Hunt and Salvation Blvd with Pierce Brosnan. Elias’ main focus is on worldwide theatrical distribution and new technologies as it pertains to post-production and new delivery systems.

    Prior to joining Myriad, Axume was Vice President of Post Production and Distribution Services at Mobius Films International, where he worked on such films as “Chaos” with Ryan Philippe, “The Wendell Baker Story” with Owen Wilson and “Border Town” with Jennifer Lopes. Before Mobius, he held the same position at Franchise Pictures for several years working on such films as “The Whole Nine Yards” with Bruce Willis, “Get Carter” with Sylvester Stallone and “3000 Miles To Graceland” with Kevin Costner, all released by Warner Bros.

  • Craig Gates

    Vice President, Business Affairs

    Craig Gates is an experienced transactional attorney who joins us from Image Entertainment where he was VP of Business Affairs and mostly responsible for handling acquisition transactions and new media, TV and international licensing-out transactions.

    Before Image, he was VP of Business Affairs and General Counsel of CenterStaging, at the time, the largest rehearsal facility West of the Mississippi and set up to record rehearsals in HD to be posted online. Prior to CenterStaging, Gates was Director of Business Affairs at the venerable Rhino Entertainment Company (owned by Warner Music Group) primarily handling six, seven and eight figure acquisition transactions.

    Gates started his career as a sole practitioner representing entertainment clients in all areas of the industry and represented, among others, PolyGram/Island Music Publishing, Chrysalis Music Group, Trimark Pictures, Giorgio Moroder, Michael Brook and managers for King Crimson, John Paul Jones, Dave Mason and Bill Nelson. He was also a partner in Interhit Records which won the first ever Best Dance Recording GRAMMY Award.

    Gates is a cum laude graduate of Claremont McKenna College and received his J.D. from Tulane University School of Law.
